A New Lens On “When One Door Closes”

Hand_showing_lens_demonstrationWe’ve all heard the phrase “when one door closes, another opens” — but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Certain doors close on us with respect to jobs, relationships and opportunities — and they’re meant to close and stay closed because they weren’t right for us (even if we didn’t see it at the time). Other doors re-open to us when the timing’s right. Either way it doesn’t make sense to keep pulling on a door to open — and wasting all kinds of time and energy — if it doesn’t open readily for us, it may not be our door to open now or ever. Don’t spend your precious time trying to convince others of how worthy you are; it’s rarely going to make a difference and is a poor use of your precious energy. When you’re born into a world you don’t fit into, it is because you were born to create a new one for yourself. Makes me think of the song by Brian Wilson entitled “I Just Wasn’t Meant for These Times.”

Finally, remember that you can’t start the next chapter of your life if you insist on re-reading the last one over and over again. On the flip side, sometimes doors are open that are meant for us to walk through — and we don’t see those open doors; they don’t even enter our frame of view! It seems trite to say ‘go with the flow’ — but be vigilant; look around you and pay attention to which doors open effortlessly for you and those that don’t, and choose wisely.
