One of my mentors, Alan Weiss, is about to come out with a terrific new book called “Lifestorming” co-authored with Marshall Goldsmith who is himself one of the most sought after executive coaches on the planet. This veteran author duo have collectively published nearly 100 books on human behavior. Neither needs the other, but they opted to come together to create something of value to their shared audience. This collaboration between two very successful juggernauts in the business world should produce a pretty powerful result given what each of them has achieved on his own. We’ll find out when the book comes out on May 1st!

I’ve always been a big believer in the power of collaboration — to harness and leverage the gifts of two (or more) talented individuals to create an outcome that’s even more valuable and impactful than if each was crafting something on their own.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney are another great example of this; there would have been no Beatles (or arguably they wouldn’t have been nearly as successful) if those two hadn’t come together — pun intended. Another case is Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak when they created Apple together; each had skills and strengths that complemented the other. Woz was the tech genius and product designer, and Jobs was the ultimate marketing and salesperson on the business side; together = magic.

I had a wonderful collaboration myself in the mid-to-late ‘90s when Todd Rundgren and I partnered to develop PatroNet, the earliest artist direct-to-fan model; at least 15 years ahead of its time in terms of market traction. We could both see that’s where things were headed when no one else seemed to share the vision; we were way too early for the market, but were ultimately proved right on the direction and the trend.

Todd is releasing his latest CD in May entitled “White Knight” and it’s a collection of new songs where Todd collaborates with a wide range of notable artists like Trent Reznor, Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Daryl Hall, Joe Walsh (The Eagles), Joe Satriani, etc. Todd has always been known as someone who does most everything himself (the songwriting, production, arranging, et al — everything except live performances), and this time he’s embraced the power of collaboration to re-invent himself yet again.

When we come together to embrace one another’s talents and gifts, to collaborate and create something more than we could on our own we create, the result is quite often an exponential outcome that exceeds whatever we’d otherwise produce solo. Often times it’s just more fun to team up with others in the creative process. Try it!
